All potential music majors are requested to audition before appropriate faculty in order to determine their eligibility to enter the program. Audition dates will be announced in advance each year for prospective students; other audition times may be available by contacting the Department of Music office or the applied area instructor. At the audition, the student may be asked to perform the following items:
Brass
- All major scales with major arpeggios
- Chromatic scale within the full practical range of the instrument
- Two solo movements or etudes of contrasting styles
- Sight-reading at an appropriate level
- Additional material may be included if desired
Keyboard
- Demonstrate major/minor scales and arpeggios (minimum oftwo octaves)
- Two prepared pieces of contrasting styles (memorization preferred)
- Sight-reading at an appropriate level
- Additional material may be included if desired
Percussion
- Demonstration of basic rudiments/scales of student's choice
- Solos or etudes on one (required) or more (preferred): snare, timpani and/or keyboard
- Sight-reading at an appropriate level on preferred instrument
- Additional material may be included if desired
Voice
- Sing a scale
- Perform two selections of the student's choice in the language of choice
- Sight-reading at an approved level
- Additional material may be included if desired
Woodwind
- All major scales with major arpeggios a minimum of two octaves
- Flute students should perform three octaves where appropriate; Clarinet students should perform two-three octaves where appropriate, etc.
- Chromatic scale within the full practical range of the instrument
- Two solo movements or etudes of contrasting styles.
- Sight-reading at an appropriate level
- Additional material may be included if desired
