James William Sobaskie teaches Music Theory III and IV, Communicating About Music, Composition, Form, Orchestration, and Music of the Beatles in the Department of Music at Mississippi State University, and he is its representative on the Robert Holland Faculty Senate.

Trained at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Dr. Sobaskie taught at the University of Wisconsin campus in Stevens Point before coming to Mississippi State.

His research publications concern the music of Schubert, Chopin, and Fauré, and he has addressed audiences in Belgium, Canada, England, France, Greece, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, and Scotland, as well as America.

Professor Sobaskie serves on the Editorial Board of Nineteenth-Century Music Review, which is published by Cambridge University Press in the United Kingdom, and is the journal’s CD/DVD Reviews Editor.  He also is a member of the Comité Scientifique of Œuvres Complètes de Gabriel Fauré, a complete works monument published by Bärenreiter in Germany, and prepared its inaugural volume, a critical edition of Fauré’s piano trio and string quartet.

Dr. Sobaskie co-edited the research anthology, Drama in the Music of Franz Schubert, published in 2019 by Boydell & Brewer in the United Kingdom. His latest project, the edited collective Gabriel Fauré: Influences and Influence, whose contributors represent five countries, will be published by Boydell & Brewer in 2025.
