Students Enrolled in Current Topics Performed at the Claiborne

Students enrolled in MUE 8033 - Current Topics performed a concert on June 24th for the residents at the Claiborne on Adelaide in Starkville. Current Topics in Music Education is a required course in the summers-only Masters in Music Education degree offered at MSU. Issues of focus this summer included equity, cultural appreciation, hip-hop as critical pedagogy, and bucket drumming. The repertoire presented by the class in their program consisted of “Kuku” celebration dance from Guinea, “Wongolo” traditional song from Haiti, “Sesere Eeeye” traditional song from the Torres Strait Islands, “The Rattlin Bog” traditional Irish folk song, “Dum Dum Song” with movements, “Love is Love” canon from the justice choir collection, “A Qua Qua Del-a Omar” Israeli children’s game song, “Hello Moon” with lyrics composed by the students, “We Will Rock You” by Queen, “Alleyua” (Pachelbel’s Canon), and “Heart and Soul,” a hit song from the 1930s. The Claiborne is a senior living center providing independent living, assisted living, and memory care services for older adults. The performance by the students is a service learning and community–engaged learning project integrated into the Current Topics class taught by Professor Robert J. Damm.
