Nirdosh Shaunak visited World Music Class
Nirdosh Shaunak visited students enrolled in World Music class on October 13th. Topics of discussion included history of India, Hinduism, karnataka sangeeta, tala, raga, improvisation, sitar, the gurukula system, women in carnatic music and society, and gender roles. Nirdosh played music on the sitar and answered questions about herself, her music, and Indian culture. It is especially valuable for students to hear the perspective of a culture-bearer when studying non-Western music-cultures. Also seen in the photo is Blaine Rossell, who took the opportunity to play the sitar.
