Dr. Patricia Shehan Campbell was inaugural speaker for World Music Series
Patrica Shehan Campbell visited Starkville on November 16th and provided numerous guest lectures concerning globalization, diversity, and inclusion. For Music Majors enrolled in Foundations of Music Education class she gave a world music pedagogy lesson on "Multicultural Music Education and Smithsonian Folkways."
The students in World Music class learned about the music cultures of Bulgaria. She visited 1st graders at Sudduth Elementary and taught them about Native American Music. Her World Music Series lecture was titled "Music as Pathway to Intercultural Understanding." Dr. Patricia Shehan Campbell taught at the University of Washing in Seatle until she retired in 2022. She chairs the Education Committee for the Smithsonian Folkways Recordings and is founder of World Music Pedagogy institute. Her work continues nationally and internationally as lecturer, researcher, and consultant on topics of music for children, cultural diversity in music education, applied ethnomusicology, and school-community partnerships in music. Dr. Shehan Campbell is serving as a consultant to Dr. Daniel Stevens (Head of Music Department) and Dr. Robert Damm (Professor of World Music and Director of Music Education Partnerships) to expand the Music Department's world music offerings including courses, concerts, lectures, and workshops.
